Carriage Bolts

Carriage Bolts are among the common types of bolts, under the round-head bolt family. Basically, these come with a rounded head, a squared neck/shoulder and a flat bearing surface. These are also known as coach bolts, round head square neck bolts, shaker screen bolts and carriage screws.

Carriage Bolts are often used for connecting wood to wood, wood to metal and metal to metal. These are commonly seen in construction of docks, decks, swing sets, patio furniture, chain link fences, and other applications that require a smooth finish. The head is not designed to turn, so this is usually tightened into place with a wrench or nut. However, this can also fit into a pre-bored hole and tightened by twisting it into the wood through the bolt’s squared neck.

There are two common finishes for a carriage bolt – zinc plating and hot dip galvanizing. The former is the more popular option as it is less expensive but only offers moderate resistance to corrosion. As for projects exposed to harsh weather conditions, a galvanized carriage bolt is recommended.
