A hex cap screw, also known as hex head bolt or hex head cap screw, is a threaded fastener that features a hexagonal head from which its name was derived. Its head comes with a washer face under it for ample bearing surface during tightening process with a wrench. This is commonly used as a general-purpose threaded fastener to put two parts together, for insertion into a pre-tapped hole, or for use with nuts. This is a common manufacturing companies, residential, commercial and industrial screw that comes in different lengths diameters and mechanical properties.

A Grade 5 Hex Cap Screw has the following properties:

Nominal Size Range: 1/4 inch through 1 inch
Proof Load: 85,000 psi
Minimum Yield Strength: 92,000 psi
Minimum Tensile Strength: 120,000 psi

Nominal Size Range: over 1 inch to 1-1/2 inches
Proof Load: 74,000 psi
Minimum Yield Strength: 81,000 psi

Additionally, Grade 5 Hex Cap Screws are made from medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered. You will also notice that the hexagonal head bears three radial lines, compared to a Grade 2 with no markings and a Grade 8 with six radial lines.

NOTE: When selecting a nut to be used for a graded hex cap screw, keep in mind that the nut should have the same grade as the bolt/screw. For instance, a Plain Grade 5 Hex Cap Screw should only utilize a plain Grade 5 nut.
